Ledra Palace: Dancing on the Line, 2020

The CYENS Centre of Excellence and the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia partnered up to create a temporary exhibition in 2021 titled “Ledra Palace: Dancing on the Line” which combined traditional methods of exhibiting with novel technological applications. The exhibition focused on a bottom-up approach providing the means and the space for the communication of people’s stories and memories, usually omitted from Cyprus’s official history. It succeeded in engaging hundreds of people all over the island who willingly and enthusiastically shared their memories and memorabilia, through social media, physical meetings or by phone, even during the difficult months of the lockdowns. The exhibition itself attracted more than 20.000 people from around the island and abroad, while special guided tours and educational programs were delivered to members of the community, schoolchildren, politicians, diplomats, and academics. The exhibition was inaugurated by the President of the Cyprus Parliament and was disseminated extensively in the press across the divide. It was also accompanied by an edited volume/exhibition catalogue, which in 2022 won the gold award in the Carob Design Awards in Cyprus.

Delivering Views Ch.9: "Photo Mikis", 2017

Mikis Sofroniou was a popular portrait photographer. In 2017, shortly before he passed away, we took over his photo studio/ shop and activated it by exposing archival material of past decades and by projecting a short documentary about his work. Visitors were able to explore the space and take away as souvenirs postcards created for the occasion. The proposed action falls under the broader goal of the non-profit cultural organization Phaneromeni 70 to activate forgotten closed spaces with a symbolic character.

Curator: Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert. Organization: Phaneromeni 70

Location: Mikis Studio, Nicosia, Cyprus

Fusion is the Future, 2016

“Fusion is the Future” was an experimental project were, through an open call, 10 artists and 10 science and humanities experts were recruited to work together to co-produce works in teams that could take visual, auditory, or sensory form. During a speed dating session, the selected participants found their “match” and formed a team. For 6 months, the participants of this project had to bypass conceptual and practical barriers in order to arrive to a final, but still evolving, work of art. The resulting works were presented in an exhibition in Nicosia’s pop-up festival in 2016. “Fusion is the Future” is a project about the creative process and not the final result. It’s about the negotiations that take place when one is confronted with individuals from different disciplines and backgrounds, and about trans-disciplinary “fusions” that can be challenging but, when they work, extremely creative and fruitful.

Curators: Achilleas Kentonis, Omiros Panayides, Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert, Niki Zanti. Organisation: Artos Foundation, the Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts of the Cyprus University of Technology, Cultural Services, Ministry of Education and Culture.

Location: Nicosia Pop-up Festival, Nicosia, Cyprus

Re-envisioning Cyprus, 2010

Artists and academics join forces in a common effort to “re-envision” Cyprus. The result is an edited volume and a photography & multimedia exhibition. The artists/authors of “Re-envisioning Cyprus” come from different disciplines – such as anthropology, social sciences, art history, literature, cultural theory and visual arts. They use various methods – some excavate past images, and some produce or comment on new ones. They exploit all kinds of materials – such as press, studio or vernacular photos, statues, landmarks, urban constructions and religious spaces.  What united them is first their wish to see Cyprus anew, rather than through officialising lenses or narratives. Second, they are rather interested in photography, and how it can help our conceptual understanding of the island.

Editors/ Curators: Peter Loizos (London School of Economics), Nicos Philippou (University of Nicosia), Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert (Cyprus University of Technology). Organisation: University of Nicosia and the Cyprus University of Technology. Part of the celebration of the 50th year anniversary of Cyprus.

Location: Pantheon Gallery, Nicosia, Cyprus
